This study examined the burden experienced by family caregivers of elderly dementia patients who are raising families, and the effects of a happiness promotion program grounded in mindfulness-based cognition therapy (MBCT) on wellbeing and happiness. Participants were 16 family caregivers of elderly dementia patients living in Busan, each of whom was randomly assigned to the experimental or control group. The experimental group participated in the MBCT-based happiness promotion program for 2 hours, twice weekly. Program effectiveness was examined with quantitative and content analysis using the Korean version of the depression scale, a measure of the burden of support for families with dementia, and the Oxford happiness questionnaire at pre, post, and one month follow-up. The findings confirmed program effectiveness, indicating that the happiness promotion program resulted in lower child care burden and depression scores, and higher happiness scores. The implications and limitations of the study are presented.
